Happy Weekend!

Friday, May 27, 2011

Sorry we have been MIA from the blog as of late. My dad and step mom were in town last week!
Hope you all have a relaxing memorial weekend planned. We've got a good hike and snorkeling spot set out for Sunday. Looking forward to some down time before our next set of visitors arrive this Thursday! We've packed them in these last few months, but we are oh so thankful that our families are coming to visit! It definitely makes living half way around the world easier!

We've got some planting and re-potting to do, glad our little plants are doing so well!

Happy Weekend!

B | A- Diverting From the Landfill

Wednesday, May 18, 2011

One downside to life on an island is that everything we toss goes into a landfill that is rising dramatically each year.. (I'm aware there are landfills everywhere, I've just never experienced first hand the repercussions of one.) In January excessive rain overwhelmed the sediment holding pond at the landfill on Oahu and caused used medical supplies and trash to flow through the storm drains out into the ocean. (Gross!)

As consumers (I feel) we rarely think about the consequences of discarding old furniture, trash and mattresses. Living on Oahu has opened my eyes to how wasteful we can be, and we've increased our efforts to minimize what we send to the trash. We are only two people, but it's amazing how much of what we purchase from groceries and packaging can be recycled rather than stuffed in the trash.

For a few weeks after the landfill overflowed there was no bulky item curbside service to the dump. As the discarded belongings began to fill the streets Mr. Whitaker and I were overwhelmed at how much furniture we found. We decided to see what/if anything could be saved from the piles and diverted from the landfill. Originally we thought we might fix or repair some of the non upholstered things we found and resell them. We've not started selling anything yet, but we have added some real character to our minimally furnished apartment.

We've got several projects in the works from salvaged furniture, but for now here's a before and after of some chairs we recently redid.

These particular chairs didn't come from the dump piles- we scored them for super cheap off craigslist.

After removing the cushions- which we found out had been previously "reupholstered" or should I say upholstered-over a few times, we sanded down the base of the chairs.

A few coats of white spray paint followed (as if you expected any other color?!) and we were ready for new fabric. Mr. Whitaker's first idea was to make the chairs a modern interpretation of the baroque style. (The motifs on the back of the chairs are reminiscent of the baroque period.) We found some fabric online that we liked but thanks to our super modest budget we had to hold off for a few weeks. Well, weeks turned into months and by the time we were ready to purchase the fabric it was gone... Just our luck.

Well, as I was browsing one of my favorite blogs I came across this fabric:

You can find sweet baby Clara 'swimming' on it in her picture from week 46 if you're a fan of Young House Love (and you should be!)

After I first found the fabric I emailed Sherry to see where she got it. She quickly responded that it came from the clearance Section of Joann's Fabrics. Of course there isn't one on this island so I gave my mom a call and explained our dilemma. Within a few weeks we had a pretty little package with 3 yards of my favorite clearance fabric inside.

Although I instantly loved the pattern, tones and water-color-esque style Mr. Whitaker found it to be too busy.

I wasn't ready to let it go. Some might call that being stubborn, I call it determination. I milled over it for a few weeks and then decided to try dye-ing the fabric to find some middle ground for me and the Mr.

I went with dark grey and the rest is history. I've dyed quite a bit of fabric before- even a dress for a formal banquet, so I was confident with the process and knew the cotton would accept the dye nicely. It turned out great and we both love the (finally) finished chairs.

Be back later this week with another project for the leftover fabric.

BBQ in a Blanket

Monday, May 16, 2011

Do.Not.Be.Alarmed- The post you are about to read involves a recipe- but by no no means does that make this a food blog. (Not that there's anything wrong with food blogs- we'll just say it's not our strongest asset as a couple.) Don't get me wrong, Mr. Whitaker and I enjoy cooking and creating recipes, but by no means claim to be any good at it. Heck, we even pay for someone else to tell us what to make for dinner each night! (We'll save that explanation for another post.)

We used some left over bbq chicken to make lunch on saturday and it turned out so good I thought I'd share:

We're suckers for recipes that take only a few minutes and a few ingredients...enter Chicken BBQ in a Blanket.

I'm sure this has been made a million times over, but for us- it's a first. I'll include our method below, but it's just as easy as you'd imagine.

First, prepare your chicken or beef- Mr. Whitaker boiled the chicken and pulled it off the bone and shredded it (because I'm deathly afraid of meat on a bone, especially chicken.)

Add seasonings and bbq sauce and coat the chicken evenly. In our case a dash of Cavender's Greek Seasoning, salt, pepper, and the one and only KC Masterpiece. (Did you see what I did there- throwing in words like a 'dash,' for a second you thought I was a legitimate cook. Don't be fooled, not for a second.)

Next get a package of crescent rolls and lay them out flat on a baking sheet. Divide the chicken between the crescents and spoon it onto the widest end of each crescent. Roll it up and bake it according to the package- add a little bbq sauce on top for some extra flavor and you're done!

Easy enough, hope you enjoy!

Creature Fear

Friday, May 13, 2011

"So many foreign worlds

So ready for us

So ready for us,

The creature fear..."

When the ladies were here we did quite a bit of snorkeling-

The waterproof camera I won earlier this year was perfect for documenting some of the underwater creatures we encountered.

This creep swam right up in my face before I realized what it was.

I know what you're thinking, and no these aren't post cards, we are just super stealthy in the ocean with a camera.

I love all the bubbles in this one.

In case you didn't know, it IS a requirement to do the robot while snorkeling...

To all our friends and family: If those pictures weren't enough to convince you to buy your tickets to come visit you might just be crazy, but we love you anyways.

An extra special shout out to my very best friend- Happy Birthday Chelsi! this sunset is for you, now get on over here and enjoy one with me already!!

What kept us busy (and happily so) in April

Sunday, May 8, 2011

We recently crossed the 6 month mark of living on Oahu and have really grown to appreciate the island more this last month. It helps that we had our first big visitors and started meeting more people our age!

 Meet the ladies:
John's mom Kay, 2 ladies she used to teach with and John's aunt made up the group affectionately known as 'the ladies'.  Poor John was so outnumbered, but he took it well!

Don't you worry, John greeted them at the airport with lei's and a BIG ALLOOOOOHHHAAAA
First drink with Kay and the ladies the night they arrived

We had a blast taking them around the island and sharing some of our favorite spots. During their trip we went to a Luau, took a catamaran cruise out in front of Waikiki, went on a hike to Manoa Falls and spent some good time on the beach.

Saturday morning there was an architecture tour in Chinatown, we did a little shopping at the markets afterward.

Where We've Been

This weekend (whole week) we've been enjoying some Portland-like weather. The overcast skies and rain have kept us off the hiking trails but it's been great to stay in and check some things off the project list for the apartment.

We rehung the world map (found here) and added some markers for the places we've been.

The blue flags are for places John has been, red for where I've traveled and the gold color is for places we've been together. We still have several pins to add, and look forward to continuing to mark our travels and adventures.

Staying Connected

Wednesday, May 4, 2011

If you haven't noticed yet- you should check out the buttons on the sidebar of the blog. Keep connected to us through facebook, twitter, pinterest and email. We are slowly but surely working on adding images to our flickr account and hope to have all of our pictures from the last year up before too long.

Weekend projects

Sunday, May 1, 2011

Another weekend gone, heck another month gone! It's hard to believe we are beginning our seventh month in Hawaii. This weekend we tackled some reorganization of the apartment, work/work related events and got to celebrate a birthday with some friends on the north shore. I even had a little time to craft. I've been wanting to try a few of the DIY projects from my Pinterest boards, glad I finally got some time to.
